Students did an excellent job last week modeling multiplication of decimals x whole numbers and decimals x decimals. We finished the week with The Game of Life. Ask your child about career, house, car, vacation, and other choices they used in their life.
Week of September 25th we will multiply decimals using the standard algorithm. We will learn to count decimals out of the factors and place back in the product. Please encourage your child to multiply decimals at home for fun practice. You can use the weekly grocery ad and ask them how much it would cost to purchase multiples of one item. We will take a grade at the end of the week using models and standard algorithms.

EARLY RELEASE on October 4th
The week of September 18th we will begin learning how to multiply decimals with models. Students will learn to color factors and find the product in the overlap. Please keep a watch on skyward for student grades. The math grade is an average of all graded assignments from Brantley’s and Ummel’s classroom. We try to label the assignments with B or U so that you will know what teacher gave the assignment.

REMINDER: Monster Truck Fall Nationals Tomorrow night: September 9th
The week of September 11, 2017, students will be multiplying up to 3 digit x 2 digit numbers. Students have learned different methods of multiplication in the past to help them understand the value of digits and the why we drop a zero. Now students will use the standard algorithm to solve multiplication problems like you did in school.
Students have been using the Multiplication!! app (Apple Store) in class to help them learn the sequence. Try this free app at home:
White Oak Intermediate is also hosting a school supply and book drive to assist Beaumont I.S.D. Please send any items next week. Students will be bringing a yellow note with more information home today.

This week we continue learning to estimate and multiplication review. Students who did not make a 100 on last weeks multiplication quiz will retake on Tuesday. I will take the highest grade of the three multiplication quizzes.

REMINDER: Monster Truck Fall Nationals will be at Lone Star Speedway in Kilgore on Saturday, September 9th at 6 p.m. Each student received one free student admission ticket last week.
This week we will be reviewing the rules of adding and subtracting decimals and estimating to solve. We will learn why these skills are important in everyday life situations.
Multiplication Fact Quizzes are this week. Students are expected to know all multiplication facts through 9×9 by Wednesday.
Students have also signed into Prodigy.com using the 5th-grade class code. I will be sending usernames and passwords home later in the week. Students will be allowed to play the prodigy math game occasionally in the classroom. However, if you have an internet connection at home, it would be beneficial for them to practice out of the classroom too. This is not a requirement and would never be a homework assignment. Welcome to 5th grade math!
We will kick off the year with basic math review including multiplication facts. Students will take a math quiz on facts starting Tuesday, August 22. We will start with doubles and multiples to the list daily until we have covered through our 9s. Please check your child’s planner to see what facts they need to practice.
Math Fun Summer Challenge charts are to be returned no later than August 25th.

Students have been learning how to find common denominators and add/subtract fractions with unlike denominators. Students who did not finish today’s assignment need to complete it for homework. We will continue adding/subtracting fractions and mixed numbers through next week.
MATH BENCHMARK: February 15th.
Students will be bringing home math folders. Please look over their work and leave in the folder. Parents will need to sign the grade sheet from the 2nd 9 weeks and talk with students about setting goals for the next 9 weeks. Students will have 2 grades for my classes on their new grade sheet. We will be learning the four operations of fractions during the month of January. Students will learn how to multiply fractions by a whole number, divide fractions by whole numbers and other fractions, add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators, and simplify their answers. Students will learn how important fractions are in everyday life situations. I look forward to working with your child on exploring fractions in a variety of ways!
